A Jew defends the cross

Short Paper by Dennis Prager

The seal of Los Angeles County used to have a small cross on it. However, after the American Civil Liberties Union objected, the seal was redesigned without the cross. Dennis Prager, a Los Angeles-based radio host, raised the issue on his radio program at the time of the vote regarding whether or not the cross should be removed. He argued that it should not because the county was founded by Catholics.

About 2,000 people, both believers of various faiths as well as non-believers, showed up on the day of the vote. As Prager points, out it was the first time Jews had defended the cross. Prager provides three personal reasons for why he mounted his crusade to save the cross on the seal: 1) he fears those who rewrite history; 2) he fears intolerance; and 3) he fears the removal of the Judeo-Christian foundation of American society. The author considers the latter “the real battle of our time, indeed the civil war of our time.” Prager contends that this battle is not about the separation of church and state, but the separation of a county from its history, and about the separation of America from its moral foundations.
