Action for Neighbourhood Change Begins

Community Story by Anne Makhoul

In this brief article Anne Makhoul describes Action for Neighbourhood Change (ANC), a 14-month “strategic research and learning project that will assess how locally-driven revitalization strategies can help citizens build strong, sustainable neighbourhoods.” ANC involved federal government departments and local organizations to improve selected communities in five cities: Surrey (British Columbia), Regina (Saskatchewan), Thunder Bay (Ontario), Toronto (Ontario), and Halifax (Nova Scotia).

Makhoul describes the organizational framework put in place to support ANC and the aspirations of government for the project vis-à-vis gaining insights into ways to address poverty and homelessness that can be applied in other communities. In addition to community capacity-building and a policy process to build relationships between community and government, the authors discusses the roles of participating organizations in this project.
