Canadian Unity Council

The Canadian Unity Council (CUC) is a non-partisan and non-profit organization that serves to rally thousands of volunteers who all believe that a better understanding of Canada’s institutions and greater direct involvement enhances national unity and popular sentiment towards Canada overall. The CUC was formed in 1964 as the Canada Council, in response to the Quiet Revolution and separatist movement in Quebec.

The Council runs activities including youth programs, exchanges, conferences, citizen participation exercises, educational programs, and research activities. The Canada Unity Council’s research and communications activities are managed by the Centre for Research and Information on Canada (CRIC). The CRIC is responsible for tracking public opinion about the federation, and keeping the CUC abreast of Canadians’ thinking. As well, polls, studies, special publications, roundtable conferences, media relations, and seminars are all managed by the Centre for Research and Education. The Summer Work–Student Exchange program is also an important part of the Council’s mandate; it gives students from across Canada the opportunity to live and work in another part of the country. The Council receives funding from governments, the private sector, and its own fundraising efforts. It has offices located across Canada.
