The Mackenzie Institute was founded in 1986. It is an independent, non-profit organization concerned with issues related to “political instability and organized violence.” The Institute adheres to the belief that our liberal democratic tradition must be fostered and safeguarded. The Institute is named for Alexander Mackenzie, the voyageur who first traced the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Ocean.
To fulfill its mandate, the Institute produces research, provides commentary, and promotes informed public debate, focusing on issues such as terrorism, political extremism, organized crime, and warfare. The Institute does not accept grants from any government, and is funded by individual donors and charitable foundations.
