Mapping the New North American Reality - Introduction
Working Paper by Stephen Blank, Stephanie Golub, Guy StanleyThis brief report serves as the introduction to Mapping the New North American Reality, a series of brief articles written by Canadian, American, and Mexican policy experts exploring the nature of North American economic integration. The purpose of this collection is to advance understanding in a way that would transcend debates centred on traditional concepts of national sovereignty and trade policy. The contributors to this collection include experts from different sectors and fields, and from governments, universities, and NGOs.
The introduction to this collection was written by Blank, Golub and Stanley, who also served as its editors. In their introduction, they point out that the cumulative result of cross-border trade and investment is, for most practical purposes, a single, integrated economy. They point out, however, that this deep economic integration has no adequate social science vocabulary, despite the profound political and social implications. Understanding this new environment of economic, social, and political integration is the purpose of this collection. Besides issues pertaining to NAFTA, other topics including financial services, infrastructure, energy, immigration, the environment, security, and civil society are explored.
