Quality of Life of Aboriginal People in Canada: An Analysis of Current Research

Daniel Salée explores the current state of knowledge regarding the broad issues affecting Aboriginal people in Canada. Salée concentrates on indicators of “quality of life” for the Canadian Aboriginal population, both from historical and contemporary perspectives. As Salée notes, “the policy community is still wrestling with the unrelenting persistence of appreciable socioeconomic disparities between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.” The author thus explores the epistemological underpinnings of the research related to this subject, particularly definitional issues pertaining to the concept of well-being. The article concludes by taking a look at the future, arguing that policies tend to differ strongly according to what vision of quality of life (political autonomy versus greater integration, for instance) one has.
