Threats to Cooperation Between Religion and State in Canada Today – Some Lessons From “One Man’s Story”

Conference Paper by Frederick Henry

In his paper Bishop Henry asserts, “Constraining religious liberty diminishes our humanity.” Denying religious freedom robs humans of the ultimate meaning and direction in their lives. Many countries have embraced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including those with diverse religious heritages. Religious liberty or freedom is an important theme in the author’s discussion. He draws on an experience (regarding a pastoral letter) from his own life to elaborate on this theme.

Henry says we are experiencing a “trumping of freedoms” in Canada. He outlines some relevant freedoms and rights from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He then discusses a complaint lodged against him by the Alberta Human Rights Commission regarding the same pastoral letter in which the author challenged one of the standard arguments used to support same-sex unions as the equivalent of traditional marriage.
