The main role of a policy research institute is to advance social science research. These groups can be focused on particular policy issues, or can be dedicated to public policy as a whole. To this end, the publications produced by a given policy research institute are usually peer-reviewed and are consistent with academic standards. Policy research institutes are generally transparent about any ideological biases they may hold, though generally less-so than advocacy groups. The Commonwealth Centre for Electronic Governance

In November 2000, the Commonwealth Centre for e-Governance (CCEG) became a legal entity incorporated in the United Kingdom and Canada. As a think tank that operates on a global scale, CCEG exists through the support of an e-Governance program of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, UK.

The Observatory on Media and Public Policy

The Observatory for Media and Public Policy at McGill University (OMPP) gathers academics and journalists together who share an interest in current affairs, public policy, and mass media in Canada. OMPP offers a forum for the discussion and analysis of relevant issues, especially relating to the relationship between media and public policy. The Observatory is housed at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, and funded through the McGill-Max Bell Strategic Initiative, with additional funding from the Donner Canada Foundation.
